But her journey to becoming a leader in self-defense education and empowerment started long before her company’s creation.
Growing up, personal safety wasn’t just an idea for Mindy; it was a necessity. Her own experiences shaped her passion for helping others. What started as a dream turned into something much bigger—a movement that now spans the nation.
“In the early days,” Mindy recalls, “we started selling the products out of living rooms and then progressed to larger events like Christmas shows and runner’s events. Every event I attended, there was always at least one woman that would approach and share her story and thank us for offering what we were. That always spurred me forward in this new mission.”
Those small gatherings in living rooms became the bedrock of Damsel in Defense’s success. They weren’t just about selling pepper sprays or stun devices. These were safe spaces for women to connect, share, and learn. The result? A thriving community of over 30,000 women today, all working to spread the message of empowerment and safety.
What sets Damsel in Defense apart is its unique blend of practicality and style. Mindy’s philosophy is simple: safety shouldn’t come at the expense of individuality. “We start first with what are effective and necessary safety features for our various devices,” she explains, “and then we mold it into what is both functional and fashionable.”
And when she says she prioritizes quality, she means it. Mindy personally tests each stun device—and yes, she has stunned herself with every new one. Her husband, a true team player, has even volunteered to test their pepper spray formulations. “Quality assurance is very important to us,” Mindy says with a laugh.
But Damsel in Defense isn’t just about selling products. It’s about education—a cornerstone of the company’s mission. “Our mission is to Equip, Empower, and EDUCATE,” Mindy emphasizes. She believes that tools alone won’t protect someone unless they know how to use them effectively. “While our products are absolutely user-friendly, they are useless in the bottom of someone’s purse if they don’t understand the foundational components of personal protection, like being aware of your surroundings and how to make yourself a hard target.”
The company regularly offers training on personal safety topics, from domestic violence awareness to campus safety. And then there’s their groundbreaking Shield Technology, which adds another layer of protection. “We developed Shield Technology, which allows you to preset 5 contacts to your device so that if the customer deploys their linked protection, it alerts those contacts to their emergency and continues to send their location until help can arrive,” Mindy explains.
Damsel in Defense’s reach extends far beyond personal protection. The company is also deeply committed to helping survivors of sex trafficking. They fund two international rescue homes, offering young girls counselling, job training, and the tools to rebuild their lives. Over 1,500 girls have been rescued and supported through these programs. “That is a very, very rewarding number of singular starfishes across the ocean,” Mindy reflects.
Mindy’s vision for the future is inspiring. She dreams of making Damsel in Defense a household name and wants it to be the first thought for parents sending their daughters off to college. “My lifelong goal is to leave this world safer than I found it,” she shares. “There is still so much work to be done in how we have these important conversations that are relevant to our mission.”
Of course, building a company like Damsel in Defense hasn’t been without challenges. Mindy has faced her fair share of skepticism, but she has remained steadfast. “It’s very frustrating to hear people say, ‘She doesn’t need that, she has me,’ or ‘I don’t need that, I carry a gun.’ A very large part of what we do is educating people on not only how to use our products but why. Most people are alone at some point in their day, and not every situation calls for lethal means of defense.”
And the stories she hears from customers make it all worth it. “I just had a returning customer come to thank me,” Mindy shares. “Last month he purchased a stun device for his daughter. He said a week after he gave it to her, she had to use it when a man tried to attack her. She stunned him and law enforcement was contacted. The officer was very impressed and said she’s going to look into our products for her family. I love what we do!”
